    If the problem is 16x^2 - 16x + 4 = 9, then:

    Factor 4 out of each term of the left side.

    4 (4 x^2 - 4x + 1) = 9

    Divide both sides by 4

    4 x^2 - 4x + 1 = 9/4

    Factor the left side - it is a perfect square trinomial

    (2x - 1) * (2x - 1) = 9/4

    (2x - 1) ^2 = (3/2) ^2

    Take square roots of both sides

    2x - 1 = + 3/2 OR 2x - 1 = - 3/2

    Solve each equation for x

    2x = 5/2 OR 2x = - 1/2

    x = 5/4 OR x = - 1/4
