    First, since there is nothing in front of the parentheses except a plus sign, you can remove them.

    5 + 3x - 1 = 55

    Now, combine like terms.

    4 + 3x = 55

    Subtract the 4.

    3x = 51

    Now, divide by 3.

    x = 17
