Each family brought 6 chairs because if you take 4x6, you get 24, which means that if each family brought 6 chairs which adds up to 24, three more are needed. So the answer is each family brought 6 chairs.

    27-3 = 24

    24/4 = 6 chairs

Each family brought 6 chairs each.
