    Let x = width

    Let length = 3x - 3

    Let perimeter = 42

    42 = 2x + 2 (3x - 3)

    42 = 2x + 6x - 6

    42 = 8x - 6

    42 + 6 = 8x

    48 = 8x

    48/8 = x

    6 = x

    The width is 6 meters.
