Michael picks 1kg of tomatoes from his greenhouse. He knows that fresh tomatoes are 95% water by weight. He puts them on the window ledge to ripen, but forgets about them. After a week, he discovers that they have dried out and are now only 90% water by weight. How much do the tomatoes now weigh?

    The non-water mass (.05 kg) is now 10% of the total weight. The tomatoes now weigh 0.50 kg.

    First you must work out 100%

    so 1000g/0.95% = 1052.631579g = 100%

    then - 10% to get 90% water by weight which is 947.3684

    therefore the answer is 947g or 0.95kg
