His total distance = 4.25 + 2.666666 + 2.91666667 = 9.833333 miles or if you don't like decimals

You could get the fractional amount by working in fractions all the way through.

17/4 + 8/3 + (17/4 - 4/3)

17/4 + 8/3 + (51/12 - 16/12)

17/4 + 8/3 + 35/12

51/12 + 32/12 + 35/12

118/12 = 59/6 = 9 5/6
