First you need to deal with the stuff in the parenthesis. So you multiply the - 4 to everything inside and get 9x-4x+8=x+20 now you can use subtract 4x from 9x to get 5x making the equation 5x+8=x-20. Now you want to isolate the variable so subtract x from both sides because what you do to one side you have to do to the other. the equation is now 4x-8=20 subtract 8 from both sides to get 4x=12 and divide by four making the equation x=3
