    Manually adjusting the negative space between two characters is called kerning x-height counter leading. There are two things confused for this in design. One is leading which is actually adjusting how the text is space vertically. Another one is tracking which is actually close to what kerning is, however instead of just two characters, it involves the spacing of the entire word.
