    2x - 2 - (x - 1) = 4 + x - 1 (-3x) ... first we distribute thru the parenthesis

    2x - 2 - x + 1 = 4 + x + 3x ... now we combine like terms on each side

    x - 1 = 4 + 4x ... subtract x from each side

    -1 = 4 + 4x - x ... subtract 4 from both sides

    -1 - 4 = 4x - x ... simplify

    -5 = 3x ... divide both sides by 3

    -5/3 = x <==
