The quotient of a number and five is eight less than the number. What is the number?

    The number is 10.

    x/5 = x-8

    You multiply both sides by 5.

    x = 5 (x-8)

    x = 5x-40

    Subtract 5x from both sides

    -4x = - 40

    x = - 40 / - 4

    x=10
