A bag of potatoes and a bag of oranges weigh 30 pounds in all. The weight of the potatoes is 5 pounds less than 4 times the weight of the oranges. Let w represent the weight of the oranges.     Well, the two equations you'd form are:

    x + y = 30, where x=potatoes and y=oranges

    x=4y-5

    From there, all that you would have to do is simply substitute (4y-5) for the value of x in the first equation. When you would do that, and simplify, you'd get 5y=35. Then, you'd divide by 5, and you get 7.
