By the remainder theorem when the function is divided by x + 3, the remainder is f (-3).

    f (-3) = 2 (-3) ^4 + 5 (-3) ^3 - 17 (-3) ^2 - 5 = 162 - 135 - 153 - 5 = - 131 (answer)
