To find the area of the flag you will find the total area Nate started with, and subtract the four 8 inch squares from that area.

    1 yard = 36 inches

    36 x 36 = 1296 square inches

    (8 x 8) x 4 = 256 square inches taken off.

    1296 - 256 = 1040 square inches

The finished flag was 1040 square inches.
