You must just set the two functions equal

10 + 3.5x = 6x

6x - 3.5x = 10

2.5 x = 10

x = 10/2.5

x = 4 hours

y = 6 (4) = $24, or which is the same y = 10 + 3.5 (4) = 10 + 14 = $24.

They paid $24 each for the rental.
