In the United Kingdom's Lotto game, a player picks six numbers from 1 to 49 for each ticket. Rosemary bought one ticket for herself. She had the lottery computer randomly select the six numbers. When the six winning numbers were drawn, Rosemary was surprised to find that none of these numbers appeared on the Lotto ticket she has bought. Should she be? Design and carry out a simulation to answer this question. Follow the four step process.

    The simulation is done by picking 6 different 2-digit numbers from 01 to 49 to represent the winning numbers.

    Assuming the numbers picked are: 22, 08, 19, 05, 24, 28

    We also pick another set of 6 different 2-digit numbers from 01 to 49 to represent the numbers picked by Rosemary

    Assuming the numbers Rosemary picked are: 36, 17, 18, 46, 49, 34

    We repeat Rosemary's pick for as many samples as possible

    Sample 2: 08, 06, 44, 09, 07, 18

    Sample 3: 40, 08, 12, 22, 17, 49

    Sample 4: 04, 30, 49, 07, 05, 21

    Sample 5: 16, 44, 11, 04, 46, 15

    Based on our 5 samples, the probability of having at least one match in a set of five tickets is 2 / 5 = 40%.

    Therefore, Rosemary should not be surprised that any of her numbers did not appear in the winning numbers.
