width and wide mean the same thing.

The idea is that the strips of paper you cut from the first piece and the strips of paper from the second piece have to be identical; in other words, if you try to cut 2 in. strips, you'll perfectly cut up the 44 in. paper but you'll have trouble with the 33 in. paper.
