    X and y are the numbers

    x is greater than y

    x=23

    if 3 times x is 5 more than 8 times y, find y

    3 (x) = 5+8 (y)

    3 (23) = 5+8y

    69=5+8y

    minus 5

    64=8y

    divide by 8

    8=y

    the smaller number is 8
