    Volume of the rectangular prism = base area x height

    Given that the volume is 144 ft³ and height is 9 ft

    volume = base area x height

    144 = base area x 9

    base area = 144 : 9

    base area = 16 ft²

    The base is a square which means both sides are of the same length

    area = length x length

    16 = length²

    length = √16

    length = 4 ft

    s, the side of the base is 4 ft
