So our only missing value to assign is how much is paid for every hour worked, or the rate. Since there's no variable left to assign, we must add a variable for the rate (which is what we're trying to figure out). Let's say that variable is r. So the function should look like this: f (x) = rx. Since our example shows the landscaper was paid $84, and he worked 3 hours, the revised function would be 84 = 3r. Simply divide both sides by 3, and you get 28 = r. So the rate is $28 an hour. Now the second part of the question. He worked 100 hours total, for the rate of $28 an hour. So he was paid a total of $2,800. He saves 15% of that, so we would divide 2,800 by 100 to get 28, then multiply by 15 to get 420. So he saved $420 dollars.
