A map of Colorado says that the scale is 1 inch to 20 miles or 1 inch to 1,267,200. Are these two ways of reporting the scale the same? Explain your reasoning.

    Recall that there are 63,360 inches in 1 mile, thus, in 20 miles, we have 20 x 63,360 = 1,267,200

    Therefore, the scale of 1 inch to 20 miles can also be represented as 1 to 1,267,200

    They are the same, only the way of saying it is different. One mile is equal to 63360 inches. Multiply that by twenty and you get 1267200.
