Multiply the second equation by - 2 and you will get the following new system:

    [tex] [tex] / frac{5}{2} x + 2y = - 2 2x - 2y = - 4

Adding the two equations results in the following equation:

    [tex] / frac{1}{2} x = - 6 Multiply both sides of this equation by 2 and you see x = - 12

Now, substitute - 12 back into either equation for x and solve for y:

    i. e. - (-12) + y = 2 from the second equation

Solving for y: y = - 10 and the solution is the ordered pair (-12,-10)
