The temperature at south pole was 34° at 8 a. m. At 3 p. m it was - 50°. By how many degrees did the temperature drop?

    84 degrees because you add the 34 to the 50 and thats how much it dropped

    Bring both of them to zero. - 50 is 50 away from zero, and 34 is 34 away from zero. 34+50=84
