Velocity is defined to be the rate of of change of position with time. Acceleration is defined to be the rate of change of velocity with respect to time. Therefore, if a change in velocity increases, the body starts to accelerate and hence during the same period the acceleration is found to become steady. After the velocity becomes steady again, the acceleration will tend to zero.
