    Let x be your smaller number.

    4x+8=larger number

    4x+8+4x=40 (if the larger is increased by four times the smaller, the result is 40

    8x+8=40

    8x+8-8=40-8

    8x=32

    8/8x=32/8

    x=4

    smaller number is 4, and

    4 (4) + 8=x

    16+8=24

    the larger number is 24
