    If (x-1) is a factor then P (1) = a (1) ^3 + b (1) ^2 + 1 = 0 (by the factor theorem)

    so a + b = - 1

    Also (x - 1) ^2 = x^2 - 2x + 1

    so a = 1 and b = - 2 Answer
