A theatre contains 431 seats and the ticket prices for a record play were $53 for adults and $24 for children. if the total proceeds were $15,390 for a sold out mantinee, how many of each type of ticket were sold?

    X = adult

    y = children

    53 (x+y=431)

    53x + 24y = 15390$

    53x+53y = 22,843

    subtract from

    53x+24y = 15,390

    29y = 7,453$

    y = 257

    53x + 24 (257) = 15,390

    53x + 6,168 = 15,390

    53x = 9,222

    x = 174
