Since there isn't a given amount of children for both age groups you can represent each group by a variable:

Let variable (a) stand for the number of children ages 6-10.

Let variable (b) stand for the number of children ages 10 and older.

For one child of age 6-10, the total of the sum of the costs of each food item given to him or her would be $1.75

For one child of age 10 or older, the total of the sum of the costs of each food item given to him or her would be $2.10

The total cost to feed children 6-10 can be represented as an equation:

    Total cost = 1.75a

The total cost to feed children 10 or older represented as an equation would be:

    Total cost = 2.1b

And if you were to find the two total costs of both groups combined the equation would look like this:

    Total cost = 1.75a + 2.1b
