    5 + x - 12 = 2x - 7

    -7 + x = 2x - 7

    -7 + 7 = 2x - x

    0 = x

    check ... sub in 0 for x

    5 + 0 - 12 = 2 (0) - 7

    5 - 12 = - 7

    -7 = - 7 (correct)

    if u were to sub in - 0.5 for x

    5 + (-0.5) - 12 = 2 (-0.5) - 7

    5 - 0.5 - 12 = - 1 - 7

    4.5 = - 8 (incorrect)

    if u were to sub in 1 for x

    5 + 1 - 12 = 2 (1) - 7

    6 - 12 = 2 - 7

    -6 = - 5 (incorrect)
