Depends on what you are factoring.

To factor a number, write a list of multiplicands (the numbers u multiply to get a product)

    for example: let's factor 120

    1x120, 2x60, 3x40, 4x30, 5x24, 6x20, 8x15, 10x12

go in order, once you repeat a number, you are done

To factor a quadratic or other equation, do it in steps

    for example: let's factor x+4x+3

find the factors of 3, which are 1 and 3

these should add to the middle coefficient (if there are multiple sets, at least one of them should) and make sure you consider the positive or negative signs, in this case, 1 and 3 do add to four

then add or subtract * pay attention to the signs * them from x

    (x+3) (x+1)
