    Let us assume the number of bags of popcorn the student Council must sell to break even = x

    Then

    50 + 0.50x = 1.50 x

    1.50x - 0.50x = 50

    x (1.50 - 0.50) = 50

    x = 50

    So by selling 50 bags of popcorn the cost price will be equal to the selling price. From the above deduction we understand that the student council has to sell at least 51 bags of popcorn per day to make a profit.
