    1) Distribute the 2.

    6x + 4 = 2x - 16

    2) Next, you'll want to get the x's on one side. So add - 2x to both sides.

    6x + 4 + - 2x = 2x + - 2x - 16

    4x + 4 = - 16

    3) Now subtract 4 from both sides

    4x + 4 - 4 = - 16 - 4

    4x = - 12

    4) Finally, divide both sides by 4

    4x/4 = - 12/4

    x = - 3
