    You need to get the X by itself. To do that, we have to make that - 3 be 0. What can we do to - 3 to get 0? Add 3. But whatever you do to one side, you have to do to the other, so we have X=-1 + 4 + 3. Now we can just solve! 4 + 3 = 7 and 7 - 1 = 6. Your answer is 6.
