You can use mixed numbers in reality when you're baking or cooking. You could have 2 3/12 slices of pizza because you have 2 different kinds of pizza for example. A mixed number is one that combines an integer and a fraction

A mixed number is one that combines an integer and a fraction ... In order to break down an improper fraction into a mixed number, just divide the numerator (top of the fraction) by the denominator (bottom of fraction). You will get a whole number with a remainder, usually.

You can apply this to regular life as sometimes you may need to calculate how many of (x) will be left. For example, if you want to fit 18 apples equally in 4 baskets, then you could work out that there would be 4 apples in each basket and 2 left over. So: 4 and 2/4 which is equal to 4 and 1/2
