    Answer: 5 allowance payments

    Step-by-step explanation:

It started on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007

On this date, he was having $5 for his birthday and he received his allowance of $35. Therefore

    Total amount is 35 + 5 = $40

    His expenses are

    For lunch, 3*5 lunches = $15 weekly

    For Saturday movies, $9.50 weekly

Total expenses for the first week = 15+9.5 = 24.5

Balance at the end of week 1

    = 40-24.5 = $15.5

He continues to receive $35 weekly

Amount in his account in week 2 is

    35 + 15.5 = $50.5

    Expenses for week 2 = 24.5

Balance at the end of week 2

    =50.5 - 24.5 = $26

Amount in his account in week 3 is

    35 + 26 = $61

    Expenses for week 3 = 24.5

Balance at the end of week 3

    =61 - 24.5 = $36.5

Amount in his account in week 4 is

    35 + 36.5 = $71.5

    Expenses for week 4 = 24.5

Balance at the end of week 4

    =71.5 - 24.5 = $47

Amount in his account in week 5 is

    35 + 47 = $82

    Expenses for week 5 = 24.5

Balance at the end of week 5

    =82 - 24.5 = $57.5

He wants to to pay for the $50 CD player. He has $57.5

So he would be able to buy it and still cater for other expenses 5 allowance payments
