A quilt shop has a rectangular piece of fabric with an area of 3 1/3 square yards. The width of the fabric is 5/4 yards. The shop owner can cut the fabric into strips that are 1/3 yard long and 5/4 yards wide a d sell them for $3 each or cut the fabric into strips that are 1/4 yard long and 5/4 yards wide and sell them for $2.30 each. Recommend the length of the strip of the fabric that the shop owner should sel to earn the greater amount of money from sale of the fabric?

    The area of the rectangle Length (L) * Breadth (B) = 3-1/3 yards2

    width=5/4 yards

    To find the length (L) = Area/width

    L=3-1/3 : 5/4=8/3 yards

    Length=8/3 yards

    After cutting into strips of 1/3 yards long and 5/4 yards wide.

    The number of pieces acquired is Total length/strip length=8/3 : 1/3=8 strips of 1/3 yards length

    The width is not considered as the value does not change

    Therefore the total amount if each strip is sold for $ 3 is 8*3=$24

    However if the fabric is cut into strips of ¼ yards long 5/4 yards wide

    Then number of pieces acquired is 8/3 : ¼ = 32/3 strips of ¼ yards length
