    Step-by-step explanation:

    Let the number be x

    x = 4y ... (1)

    3y = 2x - 12 ... (2)

    Putting (1) into (2)

    3y = 2 (4y) - 12

    3y = 8y - 12

    3y - 8y = - 12

    -5y = - 12

    y = - 12/-5

    y = 12/5

    y = 2 2/5

    And x = 4y

    Putting y = 12/5

    x = 4 * 12/5

    x = 48/5

    x = 9 3/5
