If 1160 students voted in an election, how many first-place votes are nee ded for a majority?

    To have majority, you need more than half, which is 1/2. Multiply 1160 by 1/2 and you get 580. Add one to that because if there is one more person running and you both have 580 votes then you tie, so you need 581 votes to win majority.
