Jamie and Stella are saving money to sign up for a school trip to Washington, D. C. In order to sign up for the trip, they must pay $600 upfront. Jamie earns his money by washing cars for $25 each. Stella earns her money by making pecan pies for $15 each. Jamie earns more money than Stella does because Stella only has enough supplies to make 40 pies.     25x = 600 (Multiply the number of cars he washes by the price, this needs to equal the amount he needs for the trip.)

    Part 2:

    15y = 600 (Multiply the number of pies she makes by the price, this needs to equal the amount she needs for the trip.)

    Part 3:

    25x > 15 (The problem states Jamie earns more than Stella)

    Part 4:

    Stella can bake 40 pies, replace y with 40 and solve:

    15y = 600

    15 (40) = 600

    600 = 600

    She earns $600 which is what is needed for the trip, so she can afford to sign up.
