    X=original price.

    20%=20/100=0.2

    We can suggest the next equation to solve this problem:

    x-0.2x=290

    We solve this equation:

    x-0.2x=290

    0.8x=290

    x=290/0.8

    x=362.5

    Answer: the original price was £ 362.5.
