Among fatal plane crashes that occurred during the past 6565 years, 613613 were due to pilot error, 7575 were due to other human error, 470470 were due to weather, 311311 were due to mechanical problems, and 342342 were due to sabotage. Construct the relative frequency distribution. What is the most serious threat to aviation safety, and can anything be done about it?

We have different information and we need to make a table of that, so

    cause ... Relative Frequency

    Pilot Error ... 613

    Othe human error ... 75

    Weather ... 470

    Mechanical Problems ... 311

    Sabotage ... 342

    Total: 1811

To calculate the relative distribution we need basically divide by the total and multiply for 100.

    cause ... Relative Frequency

    Pilot Error ... 613/1811*100 = 33.84%

    Othe human error ... 75/1811*100 = 4.1%

    Weather ... 470/1811*100 = 25.95%

    Mechanical Problems ... 311/1811*100 = 17.17%

    Sabotage ... 342/1811*100 = 18.88%

    Total: 100%

So the relative frequency distribution is,

    cause ... Relative Frequency

    Pilot Error ... 33.84%

    Othe human error ... 4.1%

    Weather ... 25.95%

    Mechanical Problems ... 17.17%

    Sabotage ... 18.88%

    Total: 100%

The vast majority of failures are made by pilots. The best thing to do is offer them more training. Many of these problems are due to ignorance of the terrain or carelessness due to the standardized level of security that flights generally have. Lack of practice in extreme situations can cause these problems.
