There were some toads in the pond. 3 more jump in. 2 toads jumped out of the pond. There are now 6 toads in the pond. How many toads were in the pond to begin with?

    we know that we ended with 6

    since 2 jumped out we add them back in

    6+2 = 8

    we remove the toads that jumped in because they are not part of the original group

    8-3 = 5
