Darren has a piece of wood that is 7 in by 8 in. Explain how he could divide this large rectangle into smaller rectangles

    In order to split the wood into different parts, you can find all possible factors of the two dimensions:

    8: 1,2,4,8

    7: Prime

    Since 7 is a prime number, there are only 4 factors and one of the dimensions always has to be 7

    The factors of 8 simply tell you what pieces you can split the wood into:

    7x1

    7x2

    7x4

    7x8

    Since the wood was originally 7x8, we can take that option out. Now we are only left with 3 different dimensions. in order to find out how many of each piece we need, we can divide the original wood area by the piece area:
