A local shelter had 60 animals waiting for homes. Many pets at the shelter were cats. If 70% of the pets were cats. How many cats were at the shelter.

    Total number of animals in shelter is 60. 70% of that were cats, so the number of cats is 70% * 60 or 70/100*60 = 7/10*60 = 7*6 = 42 cats
