    | x+5 | refers to the absolute value of x+5, which means it is always positive and f (x) is like y, its a variable

so f (-7) means you sub - 7 into x in the function, you get

    f (-7) = | - 7+5 | + (-7) + 5 = |-2| - 2 = 2-2 = 0
