    They bought 18 masks and 10 gloves.

    Explanation:

    Let the number of gloves be x. It is mentioned in the question that they bought 8 more masks than gloves.

    Therefore the number of masks=x+8

    Price of one glove=$18

    Price of one mask=$24

    Total amount spent=$612

    We have to represent the situation in the form of an equation

    18x+24 (x+8) = 612

    18x+24x+192=612

    42x+192=612

    42x=612-192=420

    x=420/42=10

    number of gloves=x=10

    number of masks=x+8=10+8=18
