    Let the two numbers be x and x + 40, then

    7/3 = (x + 40) / x

    7x = 3 (x + 40) = 3x + 120

    7x - 3x = 120

    4x = 120

    x = 120/4 = 30

    Therefore, the two numbers are 30 and 70.
