There are 6 faces in a rectangular prism. Each fo them are paired with another one with the same area.

    1st type of face:

    7*6=42

42*2=84 (because there are 2 of each face)

    2nd type of face:

    7*12=84

    84*2=168

    3rd type of face:

    6*12=72

    72*2=144

    Add them all up:

    84+168+144=396

The surface area is 396 square inches

    Good luck!
