    Speed of fly-by-night airplane is 617.5 miles per hour

    Solution:

    Given that,

    The max speed of a fly-by-night airplane is 346 miles faster than a soaring wing airplane

    Let "x" be the speed of saoring wing airplane

    Then,

    Speed of fly-by-night airplane = 346 + x

    The sum of their speeds is 889 miles per hour

    Therefore,

    speed of saoring wing airplane + speed of fly-by-night airplane = 889

    x + 346 + x = 889

    2x + 346 = 889

    2x = 889 - 346

    2x = 543

    x = 271.5

    Thus speed of fly-by-night airplane = 346 + x = 346 + 271.5 = 617.5

    Thus speed of fly-by-night airplane is 617.5 miles per hour
