The easiest way is to make sure the fractions have the same denominators and are improper fractions. So another way to write it is : 4/15 + 5/15. Then you can add the numerators together making the numerator 9. The denominator will stay the same.

    9/15

Since it is not simplified, divide both sides by three:

    3/5
