Each student at the picnic recevide 3 cups of ice cream. if there were 48 students, how many quarts of ice cream were needed in all.

    3 cups for each student implies 3*48=144 cups for 48 students.

    1 quarts is equivalent to 4 cups, 144 cups will give 144/4 = 36 quarts.
